French mystery horror set in 1830 about detective Vidoqc (Depardieu), who is killed before catching an elusive serial killer that is said to steal the souls of young virgins. In the frame story, a reporter (Canet) tries to complete the detective's biography by finding the 'monster'. Uniquely designed chiller is well-directed and has an interesting narrative structure, which outshines the rather conventional story. Marc Caro (DELICATESSEN) is credited as character designer.
