The Top 100 of the BEST Cult Movies of the 20th Century
After growing demand, I have decided to compile and publish my list of the cult movies that I think are the best ones out there. Please mind that, in years to come, I may change my mind about one or the other title (not whether it is very good, but whether there is not a better title that could take its place). All of the movies in the list have been rated ***½ or **** by me. Clicking on the titles will lead you directly to the reviews. As usual, I'm looking forward to your ideas about this list. Please note that this is a subjective list (by someone who has spent a lot of time on the subject), so don't feel offended if your favorite is not in here. Also please mind that they are not the "Best Movies Ever Made" - compiling such a list is impossible as films have been made in such a variety of genres. I challenge you to make suggestions about which movie should / should not be in the list. Post you messages at the forum, please. More lists like this are to follow.
Please allow me to make a brief introduction to the topic. The real cult movies began to be made in the 1960s. Before that some films acquired a cult, most notable examples are the perennial favorite CASABLANCA (1942), or some John Wayne westerns (THE SEARCHERS, for example). Notable examples from the 1950s could be Alexander Mackendrick's THE LADYKILLERS (1955) - well, almost any Alec Guiness comedy - or Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO (1958) and NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959).
The list below now consists of 100 must-see cult movies of the 20th century. For the time after 2000, you will find an open list below that attempts to start a new list of the 21st century.
