Guillermo del Toro is a Mexican filmmaker, who became famous in cult circles with his 1993 fantasy drama CRONOS (1993), made when he was not yet 30 years of age. He went to Hollywood next, where he (successfully) directed the cockroach horror MIMIC (1997). Four years later, he went to Spain to direct a very personal film, EL ESPINAZO DEL DIABLO (2001), which dealt with the horrors of the Spanish civil war. Five years later, del Toro made EL LABERINTO DEL FAUNO (2006), another Civil War fantasy drama, which would garner him an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Screenplay (the film won for Best Cinematography, Art Direction and Make-Up). Between these two films - his best - he ventured into commercial filmmaking, with the sequel BLADE II (2002), an unremarkable horror sequel, and HELLBOY (2004), a comic book adaptation, which turned del Toro into a director star. Currently, he is working on a HELLBOY sequel.
