Highly interesting early Chabrol (his third movie) examines upper-class mores in contemporary country setting. Belmondo has a key role as a free-spirited vagabond, who breaks the harmony of a family, as his friend, gorgeous Lualdi, starts an affair with the patriarch. All this will expectedly lead to a crime. Chabrol's direction is remarkable, as he further develops his spatial style and camera moves. Excellent color cinematography (by Henri Decae) further enhances beautiful scenery, score adds melodramatic touch to the proceedings. Chabrol coscripted with Paul Gégauff, adapting Stanley Ellin's The Key to Nicholas Street. Philippe de Broca was assistant director. Also known as LEDA, WEB OF PASSION.
