Bitter-sweet comedy drama about a crazy suburban family from the lower middle class. Dad Kinnear is trying to get a book published, gay uncle Carell has just tried to kill himself, teen son Dano is refusing to speak and daughter Breslin is preparing for a beauty pageant with her grampa Arkin (in an Oscar-winning turn). Together they embark on a trip to California to bring Breslin to her competition. Oscar-winning script by Michael Arndt is hellishly funny at times. Best suited to American audiences.
